Siskel and Ebert would have loved Mad Max: Fury Road
Disappointing. Nothing really surprising or new, unlike the last one. Undid a lot of what was good and interesting and new about the last one (democratisation of the Force, killing the big bad, Luke being messed up). Had no important role for most side characters (especially Rose). The introduction of new rebel stormtroopers was cool, but not adequately developed, and didn’t affect how they gleefully killed all the other stormtroopers. Didn’t handle Ben’s arc very well. Nonetheless I was entertained the whole time.
A very trauma-informed movie, fascinating world, ridiculously OTT in every way, amazing visuals, genuinely enthralling action (I say this as someone who finds most action in movies boring - I just wait for the dialogue, plot, or character stuff), and as my partner noticed, a great theological statement about redemption and about eschatology. I consider it a masterpiece!
