This movie was reminiscent of Devil Wears Prada, but it lacked the same passion and excitement that comes with a story based on a real person. The real hang-ups, though, for me, were the various tropes imbedded in the film. Here are a few:
- the politically correct woman who tries to teach the “boys club”
- the stereotypical small-minded white male who eventually comes around and becomes the main character’s love interest.
- the marital scandal that inevitably gets leaked and threatens the career of a celebrity.
There’s more, but these are the only ones that were vividly apparent to me. These tropes did not destroy the film, but they added some cringe to the writing that made the story seem all too formulaic.
