what first appears to be your standard indie dramedy is elevated by some excellent cinematography, great performances, and an interesting view into chinese society and custom. add in a surprisingly effective score and well, youve got a pretty damn good film.
this film makes it extremely apparent how much better the period drama is when you drop most of the overwrought trappings of well, the period drama. the characters in this film interacted like actual people instead of victorian action figures, and was thus far better for it. also add a half a point for the hilariously random casting of their dad. better call paw.
