"A poem needs understanding through the senses. The point of diving into a lake is not immediately to swim to the shore but to be in the lake, to luxuriate in the sensation of water. You do not work the lake out, it is a experience beyond thought. Poetry soothes and emboldens the soul to accept the mystery."

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

There aren't very many animated films that achieve the sublime. The only other one that comes to mind is The Grave of The Fireflies and it's directed by the same man who did Kaguya, Takahata Isao.

Ultimately, I saw this as a story about being mortal, about not always getting what you want and attempting to find happiness in a flawed world.

    Wolf Children

Urban fantasy executed perfectly. Between the exquisitely rendered scenes of domestic bliss and the visceral, heart-wrenching moments, this movie manages to portray the difficulty of raising two kids as a single mother and provide unique coming-of-age narratives for the two young children.

  • Oblivion

Gorgeous visuals ruined by weak pacing and not enough character development for the support cast. Mostly enjoyed for the spectacular production design.
