Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The question is not whether this movie was terribly plotted, terribly paced, terribly stupid, and excruciating to watch. It was. It's not whether Leia had to talk like a fortune cookie, whether C3PO had to be more annoying than Jar Jar ever was, or whether the lightsaber fights had to be so tedious and repetitive. No, of course they didn't! This movie could have been much much more fun to watch.

The question is whether this could have been otherwise.…

Queers are associated with kinkiness but straight people are turned on by weddings. Weddings!

A Bread Factory Part One: For the Sake of Gold

Just as funny, heartfelt, moving and powerful as the first time. What's so incredible about this film is how effortless it feels. A huge cast of characters and lives, an entire town is introduced with such seemingly small gestures and scenes, and an entire critique of the art world that doesn't for a moment lose sight of the power and stakes of art is developed through an image of a community facing challenge and flux.

It is so incredibly rare that an important piece of literature can be adapted into an excellent film, rarer still when that film sticks incredibly close to its text, especially if that novel is an exquisitely careful internal and psychological portrait. But The Haunting, while being beat for beat the filming of Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House, manages to translate her writerly techniques into cinematic ones, while addressing, with equal force, interest and clarity, the same themes. Even knowing…

Half watched this while my partner had it on and honestly I'm lying to myself I'm never gonna really sit down and focus on this. Love and compassion are not sufficient responses to Nazism and the fact that Nazis were and are ridiculous is not a critique, but part of their power in ironically destabilizing the regime of meaning, so, insufficiently anti-fascist and post facto reveals the limits of the melodramatic power to induce love and compassion present in all Waititi's films.

I hope I can like the next thing Waititi makes as much as I loved his previous stuff.

I hate to say this, as it was a Secret Cinema rec (shout outs to Harlequinade! I really do think this was a good pick for me, and also, sorry) and I had it in my watchlist and was excited to see it, but I kinda hated this.

This is a fascist troll of a film, with its ur-racist genocide against the violent kidnapping savages narrative explained and laid out by an indigenous character, who distances "real natives" such as…
