Scott Cole’s review published on Letterboxd:
I always admire a film that takes a big, confident swing and no film that I've seen this year has put itself forward in such an assured way as Trey Edward Schults' Waves. While it is sort of relentlessly bleak, I found myself anxious, nervous, and wrapped up in the fates of these characters in a way I haven't in a very long time. The movie also has a big narrative shift about halfway through that reminded me of another underrated gem The Place Beyond the Pines. The performances are all excellent and, while the movie is meticulously directed within an inch of its life, I found it all extremely moving. One of the year's best for sure.
