Performances, and direction, worthy of boundless respect. Plus one scene that's as cauterizing, powerful, and bone-chilling as anything you'll ever see in a horror film. That said, it's so achingly sad I'm quite sure I'll never watch it again.
My first viewing of REPULSION has officially pried my eyes open to Catherine Deneuve's brilliance as an actress. She's riveting and utterly convincing as an already-troubled young woman who plummets into insanity when a combination of circumstance, misogynistic men, and her own neuroses sends her off the deep end. Polanski was always open as to his intent to craft an art film from the horror genre here. Mission accomplished.
